The
Threat
of
Wandering
Wandering is the most life-threatening behaviour associated with people who have AD or related dementia. Approximately 59% of persons with dementia wander of those 59%, 72% will do so repeatedly. The survival rate of a person with cognitive impairment, in good physical condition, that is missing up to 24 hours is 50%. After 24 hours, they will usually be severely injured or dead.

What is Project Lifesaver of Greater Victoria?
Project Lifesaver is a complete program integrating first responders, law enforcement, search and rescue, people with Alzheimer Disease or related dementia and their caregivers with training, technology and education. This program has proven to save lives and enables those conducting the search to save time, money and staffing.
Project Lifesaver is currently operating in over 1,100 communities throughout North America with 17,000 active users. Over 2,400 searches have been performed, with a 100% success rate and an average find time less than 30 minutes.
Communities that have implemented Project Lifesaver experience a positive community impact and immediate social benefits. Search times and budgets spent by first responders, law enforcement and search and rescue groups to locate missing persons are greatly reduced. Project Lifesaver dramatically increases the chances of survival for the person who has wandered, and provides caregivers peace of mind.

How the Project Lifesaver Solution Works:
- Your loved one is first identified as an elopement risk.
- They are then outfitted with a Personal Locator Unit (PLU) worn on their wrist or ankle.
- If your loved one goes missing, you contact authorities as per the instructions received during your enrollment appointment.
- Law enforcement and other public safety agencies are trained and certified on electronic search and rescue procedures by Project Lifesaver International.
- Trained search and rescue teams use specialized Search and Rescue Receivers to track the radio signal being emitted from the Personal Locator Unit (PLU) on your loved one's wrist or ankle.
- Your loved one is located and returned to you safely.
