Well it truly is 'the dog days of summer' now with the current heat wave sweeping through.  It's a time when we all want to get outside and enjoy a little sunshine.  This is true for your loved ones suffering with dementia as well.  That's why it's also a time of heightened vigilance for caregivers as greater numbers of wandering incidents tend to occur during milder weather and when temperatures sore heat stroke becomes a concern.  In this issue of our Memories Newletter we hope to bring some helpful and informative tips and techniques you can use to protect those you care for. 
 
Did You Know?
A simple blood test could predict Alzheimer's disease up to 10 years before symptoms appear!
 

Scientists found that levels of a protein called clusterin rise in the human body "many years" before symptoms of Alzheimer's or dementia first appear. By identifying the level of clusterin in the bloodstream, doctors may in the future be able to accurately predict the likelihood of a patient going on to develop the disease. An early test for the condition would allow patients to have treatment and adapt their lifestyle to minimise its impact.

Rusty was by habit an early riser. In the years we spent together, it wasn't uncommon for him to milk the cows and complete some other odds and ends before breakfast...he worked sixteen to eighteen hours a day. To anyone involved with agriculture this, undoubtedly sounds familiar. 

As time went on, Rusty gradually found reasons to delay the completion of common tasks, either for a few hours or even seasonaly. "Our hay isn't ready to cut," he would say, even though a neighbour close by had his already harvested and in the barn. "We don't need to dig those potatoes yet. They have weeks left to grow," he'd comment, even though the weatherman was predicting snow.

Tip...
If your loved one is getting up in the night and you don't realize it try attaching a bell to the bedroom door to alert you if they leave the room.
